Da Nang: Vietnam’s up-and-coming craft beer capital?

Our top 5 Da Nang tap rooms, ranked.

Table of Contents

When we booked our three-week stay in sunny Da Nang, a coastal city in Vietnam’s central region, we expected golden sand, crystal water and tropical heat.

We did not expect to get golden ale, crystal glasses and tropical flavours.

For a long time, Ho Chi Minh City has been lauded as Vietnam’s craft beer capital. Being home to big name-breweries like Pasteur Street and iconic taprooms like Malt, it’s easy to see why.

But just a short flight or scenic sleeper train away, there’s a new kid on the block. Da Nang mixes the quality and variety of Ho Chi Minh City’s craft beer scene with gorgeous coastal views and consistently brilliant weather.

Here are our favourites, ranked:

#5 - Bana Brewhouse

The allure of Bana Brewhouse lies in its location: perched atop a misty mountain in a Disneyland-style, medieval French village. It feels like drinking beer in a Game of Thrones tavern (without the death, destruction and incest, of course).

They had a good selection of beer, though the ale we were desperate to try was out of stock on the day of our visit, and the price tag was pretty high, probably due to the unique location at the top of the world’s longest cable car.

We supped our oversized steins of Atlas Wings Dark Lager as medieval-themed characters danced around us in true tavern-style fashion. It was a fun, if a little gimmicky, way to experience craft beer, earning it a spot on our Da Nang brewery round-up.

#4 - Brewhaha

Even from the outside, Brewhaha looks like a beer lover’s dream. It’s a multi-level balcony situation with a huge, flashing sign that reads ‘ICE COLD BEER,’ situated on the corner of a main road on the banks of the Hàn river.

Brewhaha serves as the taproom for 5 Elements Brewing. It boasts a gorgeous, spacious patio area and it has a much more local feel to it than the other breweries in the list, which cater more to tourists.

We tried the ‘London-style’ ale and it was truly delicious. We’d had a long day of exploring and the light, crisp ale was exactly what we needed.

We didn’t eat here as the food menu was a little limited, but we did see plenty of the locals sat at tables sharing an abundance of food that looked like it had come from outside the establishment, so maybe that’s an option too.

#3 - Heart of Darkness

Heart of Darkness is a Saigon-based brewery with a taproom in Da Nang. They have an exquisite range of beers, all in different styles, ABVs and experimental flavours, our favourite being the Loose Rivet IPA.

I would haveloved with all of my darkness-filled heart to have Heart of Darkness at the top of my list. Their double and triple IPAs encapsulate everything I love about beer: opaque, pours like a smoothie and burns on the way down.

Unfortunately, their Da Nang tap room loses points for food and ambience. Set at the ground level of a hotel, facing onto the main road with black-painted walls and very little seating, it was a bit of a dark and dingy atmosphere, but that was quickly forgotten as soon as we got a sip of that potent, hoppy nectar we haven’t stopped dreaming about since.

On top of this, both of our burgers arrived stone cold in the middle. All of that being said, their beer was still excellent enough for them to make number 3 on the list, so they clearly have something going for them.

We’ve seen Heart of Darkness being sold in plenty of places in Vietnam, including BurgerCraft in Hoi An, where we had one of the most delicious burgers of our lives. So, if you’re after an out-of-this-world pint and a good meal, consider giving that a go.

#2 - ESCO Beach

With two of their own-brand beers to their name, ESCO beach makes the top five thanks to its crisp lager, gorgeous food and unmatched ambience.

They also offer a selection of tap beers from 5 Elements brewing, which are delicious too, but the ESCO Beach house lager was the light and crisp remedy to a long beach walk in the sticky heat.

While their beer selection may not be as broad as similar establishments in the area, their beach-front lounge setting complete with sunken conversation pits and small infinity pool gave us real, intimate beach club vibes.

We weren’t lucky enough to witness their fire show, but we were told by some fellow travellers that it exceeded even the famed weekend display boasted by Da Nang’s dragon bridge.

#1 - East West Brewing

We’ve reached Da Nang’s craft beer champion.

If you want the full lowdown, you can read our ode to East West brewing here, but here’s a brief summary.

I think I could spend the rest of my life at Da Nang’s East West Brewing tap room. It sits along the same strip as ESCO lounge: right on the beachfront, Son Tra peninsula to the north, and downtown Da Nang to the south.

The vibes are immaculate. Everything you could ever want from your typical tap room, complete with sofas and fairy lights on their beachside patio.

They offer a very extensive range of delicious beers (our favourites were the Far East IPA and the Summer Hefeweizen), complete with a bottle shop and a little merch stand, which were nice touches.

Are there any unsuspecting places you’ve visited that have the potential to become craft beer capitals? We’d love to hear ‘em!

Catch you next time

All our love
